The office of sheriff is “anachronistic,” unaccountable to the general public, and need to be replaced with a much more qualified county police office, says a new study.
“There even now need to be a county legislation enforcement agency to provide unincorporated municipalities where they exist,” argues the study, published in the March 2018 version of the Virginia Legislation Overview.
“However, the twentieth century was a tale of policing getting much more professionalized, and counties have more and more located that a qualified, focused county police office is a better organization to cope with legislation enforcement than a jack-of-all-trades sheriff.”
The study, penned by James Tomberlin of the University of Virginia College of Legislation, explained neighborhood sheriff’s elections give negligible accountability considering the fact that so a lot of incumbents operate unopposed.

The study advocates merging county and city policing companies into just one office.
